Noticing More: After the Rain

A large part of Super Ordinary Life involves exploring and collecting examples of regionally and culturally specific ordinary sights. Probably not the sort of sights that a tourist guide book might pick up on but, more of the type that hint at the how people in the locality live and think. One such example is expressed in the umbrellas of Tokyo.

If you walk around Tokyo on a dry day that follows a day of rain, you can expect to see a lot of open umbrellas hanging by their hooks from railings, like this.

It’s good to see umbrellas drying out like this. Unwatched and unsecured. It reminds us of the respect that many people in Tokyo have for their belongings, no matter how low cost they are and the respect they have for the belongings of others.
