"VAGUE IDEAS" ART BOOK - 4 COPIES ONLY
"VAGUE IDEAS" ART BOOK - 4 COPIES ONLY
The art book version of Vague Ideas comes from an album on my phone called vague ideas, named after Jean-Luc Godard’s line about confronting vague ideas with clear images.
Inside are small recognitions, daydreams, and fragments at the beginning of something. Alongside the images are notes on the creative process, the joy and the missteps.
Entirely handmade and painstakingly created, each image is printed on fine washi photo paper and mounted onto washi pages which means no page is exactly the same. Printed on paper chosen from my personal collection. All are made in Japan, many produced by craftspeople in long-running workshops. They’re selected for how they hold light and for their tactile character.
The book is meant to be spent with slowly, near a window, where light can move across the pages. Some pages can be lifted and layered letting the paper act as a filter and changing the images as you look. Other pages will create unexpected and poetic results.
Each Vague Ideas art book has been hand bound by me into a concertina format of three sections, using red thread to hold it together. The cover is made of heavy card, hand cut with a papier-mâché detail on the front. Signed and dated on the inner back cover.
Nothing about this art zine is perfect. It is slow-made using materials made by craftspeople and that means accepting the natural and honest nuances that occur to make each page, print, stitch unique. Intended to be more than just a quick flick-through, I hope that the thought that has gone into the printing, texture and light of the art zine will create an experience beyond a just visual one.
